Thousands of HH Volunteers to Participate in the 2019 National Day of Service

In a desire to follow Jesus Christ’s example of service, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints often ask themselves the question, “Have I done any good in the world today?”

A phrase taken from the Church’s hymnal found on ChurchofJesusChrist.org, the 9-word question serves as a constant reminder for many Latter-day Saints to search continually of opportunities to serve, especially those in need.

The Church’s National Day of Service is on 18 May and the theme will focus on this 10-word question, “Have I Done Any Good in the World Today?” with the hope to inspire members and friends of the Church to dig deep within themselves and ask what other good things they can do to the people around them.

With that theme in mind, thousands of Helping Hands volunteers are expected to don their trademark yellow vests and dedicate thousands of man-hours to provide service to their community.

"Service to others is an important characteristic of the followers of Jesus Christ," said the members of the Philippines Area Presidency. "There are several Helping Hands opportunities for Church members to be able to give their time and talents to bless others. You can let your light so shine before others as representatives of Christ.”

For over 10 years now, the Helping Hands volunteers have been helping families and individuals as well as partnering with different government and non-government organizations to support and improve the communities where they reside.

In most cases, they help people affected by natural disasters and other emergencies. However, the service that HH volunteers provide extend far beyond emergency responses. Other voluntary services they provide include participating in the Brigada Eskwelain preparation for the opening of the school year, mangrove tree planting, blood-letting, cleaning of rivers and other public places, sports coaching, skills training, and many other service-oriented activities.

For this year’s NDS, Church leaders and members are encouraged to find and organize meaningful and relevant service projects that will not only improve their communities but also help children, youth and adults become more sensitive to the needs and challenges that others face and develop a desire to help one another.

The Helping Hands project was established in 1998 and it is a program that brings together members of the Church and their friends to provide service and usually not in goods or materials.
