Panglao Branch in Bohol Conducts Church Open House

In an effort to increase understanding about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' beliefs, programs, and practices, the Panglao Branch (small congregation) of the Tagbilaran Philippines Stake (diocese) conducted an open house at their meetinghouse in Doljo, Panglao on 8 December 2018. 

President Jerome G. Galotera of the Tagbilaran Philipines Stake (Diocese), presided over the event along with President Alex Nale Bongawan of the Panglao Philippines Branch. Both of them welcomed other stake leaders, branch members and friends of the Church. 

In his short message, President Galotera highlighted a New Testament scripture about the account of the birth Jesus Christ. "The angel declaring to the shepherds to fear not for he is bringing good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people is very much like Panglao Branch," he said quoting from the scripture. With the new international airport already operating, more people will be flying to the province. "Panglao Branch will serve as a beacon as it grows in strength and beauty, spreading the good news to its neighborhood and the whole community," he said.

Meanwhile, President Bongawan emphasized the purpose of the open house, which is to help guests and visitors know the basic beliefs and doctrines of the Church, its signature programs that help families and communities. It also aims to build common grounds with other religious groups within the community. 

After the short program, the cutting of the ribbon signaled the start of the tour. Among the 58 attendees were Mr. Alejandro A. Arbutante, Panglao Municipal Administrator who represented the mayor of the town; and Hon. Venzencio B. Arcamo, provincial board member of the first District of Bohol.

Mr. Arbutante expressed his thoughts about families, particularly on how similar the Church's regard on families as important basic units of society. He further stressed at the end of the tour his gratitude for the invitation. “I’m glad to be here. It reminded me of my learnings when I was in the seminary before. I was refreshed!"

During the tour, guests had the opportunity to ask questions, including the reasons behind basketballs courts found in all chapels, what the Word of Wisdom and many others. Members who volunteered to man the exhibit stations answered the queries of the visitors. 

One visitor commented about the Primary program of the Church. “It’s so nice that your church also teaches young children (Primary)..at least they also learn when they attend church.”

Another visitor also expressed delight in knowing about the self-reliant program of the Church. "Wow! It’s good that your Church gives training for members to be self-reliant!”

After the tour, the guests enjoyed their snacks prepared by the Relief Society sisters. Additionally, guests took home with them Liahona magazines, family booklets, and tokens as gifts from there Latter-day Saint hosts.
