For the 1,500 families living in Barangay Tipolo, Mandaue City, no one ever thought that they’d lose their homes in just one night.
In the early morning of 27 June 2019, a blaze destroyed 500 homes, causing families to flee to the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) to seek temporary shelter.

Despite losing their homes and the memories the families have had in their houses, hope remains a beacon of strength. In a desire to relieve the suffering of the affected families, Latter-day Saints Charities, several members, and full-time missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints extended help by packing and distributing sleeping kits and relief goods.
Repacking of sleeping and food kits took place at the Mandaue Philippines Stake (Diocese) Center of the Church.
In coordination with the Mandaue City government and LDS Charities, Helping Hands volunteers and full-time missionaries distributed a total of 700 sleeping kits at the temporary shelter. Each kit consisted of sleeping mats, blankets and mosquito nets.
Furthermore, affected families received a total of 725 bags of relief goods that were packed for a family of four, which comprised of noodles, canned goods, sachets of powdered milk and a bag of rice.
During the distribution, Mandaue City First Lady Sarah Cortes was present along with Tipolo Barangay Councilor Daryll Metante, in which both expressed gratitude to the Church that provided relief goods to the families.
Additionally, Metante gave thanks to the volunteers for the smooth distribution process. Despite the rain showers and the absence of electricity within the CICC premises, families that sought shelter in the area were able to receive the relief goods.
Apart from that, 350 families received food and sleeping kits after a recent blaze in Gun-ob and Soong, Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. Local members and full-time missionaries of the Church repacked blankets, sleeping mats, canned goods, noodles, and other basic food items to relieve the survivors in their temporary suffering. The relief goods were delivered on 18 July 2019.
Latter-day Saints Charities is the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its purpose is to relieve suffering, foster self-reliance and provide opportunities for service.
Part of its mandate is also to provide emergency response to those affected by disasters and natural calamities. Sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ, LDSC follows the admonition of Jesus Christ to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, take in the stranger, clothe the naked and visit the sick and afflicted.
