Two Latter-day Saint Women Receive Award from Iloilo LGU

In line with the Women’s Month Celebration, the Iloilo City Government awarded 14 extraordinary women during The Outstanding Women of Iloilo City (TOWIL) and among those awardees were two female members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Maridan Nava-Sollesta and SJO2 Jovelyn Laserna-Valencia were given recognition in the TOWIL 2019 during the awarding ceremony on Friday, 22 March 2019 at Robinson's Place Iloilo.

Nava-Sollesta‘s and Laserna-Valencia’s exemplary service in the field of business and protective service made them earn the prestigious award.

Sollesta is the CEO of the Maridan Industries Incorporated, a pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution company based in Iloilo City.

She is also the Iloilo City and Iloilo Province Area Coordinator of the Church's LDS Family Services Addiction Recovery Program (ARP). She was instrumental in gathering a sufficient number of volunteers, social workers, teachers, and group leaders to teach program enrollees leadership skills, improve interaction skills and conduct seminars to PWUD or person who uses drugs.  The ARP also helps individuals suffering from different kinds of addiction, such as alcoholism, gambling, abuse, and pornography.

Since the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between LDS Family Services and the City Government, Iloilo City has now more than 300 drug surrenderees’ graduated and were recognized as free from drug addiction by the DOH and the Philippines National Police.

As a woman who's dedicated herself to a faith-based structure program on drug prevention and control, a mother to her three sons, and a loving wife to her husband, the businesswoman believes that life is more meaningful because of three important things: to serve God, to serve family, and to serve the community.

Valencia, on the other hand, is a member of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and is assigned at Dalayunan Home for Boys as a supervisor responsible for the utmost delivery of the center.

She is also the organizer of the Barangay-based rehabilitation program for Tokhang surrenderees which benefited 37 successful graduates.

She is a wife of current Mandurriao Chief of Police, Chief Inspector Marlon N. Valencia and a mother of two children. Despite her achievements, she remains humble and purpose driven.
