LDS Charities Donates 2,100 School Kits in Siargao

2,100 school kits were provided to junior and senior high school students in the municipality of Del Carmen, Siargao. Each school kit contained a back pack, notebooks, pens and a water bottle.

The schools that received the school kits were Del Carmen National High School, Mariano Matugas Memorial High School, Oguing Navarro Memorial High School, Caub Integrated School, Surigao State College of Technology del Carmen Campus Laboratory High School, and Mount Carmen School of Siargao.

Del Carmen is a 5th class municipality with many families living below the poverty line. Some students have stopped going to school due to their distance from other neighboring islands.   Students would be able to use their new school kits as they take Junior High School now offered in Caub Integrated School.

Mayor Alfred Coro of Del Carmen, Siargao expressed his deep gratitude to LDS Charities, the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, for helping the students with their basic school needs. He said that some students do not even have backpacks, basic school supplies or even slippers so that they can walk comfortably to school. "The school kits provided to them is a great addition to their basic school supply needs," he added.

This project is in partnership with Alagang Kapatid Foundation, Inc. (AKFI) Kenneth Lee, project manager of LDS Charities coordinated with Menchie Silvestre, executive director of AKFI. Currently, there is no Church congregation in Siargao but there are about 3 member families living in the island.
